Nolan County Jail Overview

Nolan County Jail is operated by the Nolan County Sheriff's Office at 211 Avenger Field Road, Sweetwater, TX 79556. Sheriff James E. Villanueva leads the office. The jail and sheriff complex is separate from the Nolan County Courthouse on East Third Street, so custody questions, visitation, inmate funds, mail, and open-records requests route to the Avenger Field Road office. Court-copy and filing questions route to the courthouse clerks.

The facility is the only confirmed in-county detention facility for Nolan County's public inmate-population map. No separate county annex, county work-release building, public city jail roster, TDCJ prison, BOP prison, or ICE detention center was confirmed in official sources. City arrestees and arrests by local or state officers generally route into the county booking process unless a specific agency diverts, cites, hospitalizes, transfers, or otherwise handles the person outside Nolan County Jail.

Nolan County Jail Population

Texas Commission on Jail Standards current population data lists Nolan County Jail with a 96-bed rated capacity and a total jail population of 79 on June 1, 2026. That is about 82.29 percent of capacity. The same current row reports zero federal inmates in the jail on that date. The reported population is small enough that a change of a few people can move the percentage a lot, but the June 2026 data does not show Nolan over rated capacity.

The TCJS Nolan row shows the strongest local category as pretrial felony custody, with 34 male and 4 female local pretrial felons on June 1, 2026. Other categories include local Class A/B misdemeanor pretrial custody, bench warrants, parole or blue-warrant holds, parole violators with new charges, county-jail felony sentences, and TDCJ-sentenced or paper-ready inmates awaiting transfer. The public sources do not give a pod map, housing-unit count, year built, or public security-level matrix.

Who Nolan County Jail Holds

Nolan County Jail holds adult local custody. That includes people arrested by the Nolan County Sheriff's Office, Sweetwater Police Department, Roscoe Police Department, Texas DPS, and other local or state officers in Nolan County. It also includes defendants awaiting magistrate warnings, bond, prosecutor filing decisions, or court dates. County-sentenced inmates may serve short local sentences there, and some people are held on bench warrants, parole or blue warrants, or other agency holds.

A county jail record is not the same as a state prison record. After conviction and sentencing to TDCJ custody, a person may stay in Nolan County Jail while transfer paperwork is completed, but the long-term locator becomes the Texas Department of Criminal Justice inmate search after state intake. Citizen Connect does not publish a refresh rate in the research file, and released-inmate retention was not found. A recent arrest may still be in booking. A sentenced person may have transferred to TDCJ. A federal or immigration case may have moved outside the county roster. For old booking records, submit a written open-records request instead of relying on the live roster.

The Sheriff's Office public pages list the same Avenger Field Road address for jail services, mail, funds, in-person records requests, visitation, and public contact. Nolan County Jail Visitation

Nolan County Jail visitation is available online and in person for eligible inmates. NCSO says inmates must generally be in custody more than 48 hours and not suspended for discipline before visits. Public visits are listed daily from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Each visit may last up to 30 minutes, and NCSO says inmates may receive unlimited remote or in-person visits each week, while minimum jail standards still require at least two visits weekly with one evening or weekend option.

Check the jail before travel if discipline, court movement, health restrictions, weather, or staffing could affect a visit.

Visitors over 17 need valid, unexpired photo ID with date of birth. Minors under 17 must be accompanied by a parent, legal guardian, or legal counsel, and documents may be required. Dress rules bar tank tops, tube tops, sheer tops, low-cut V-neck tops, and shorts or skirts more than 2 inches above the knee. No food or drinks are allowed in the lobby, and no cell phones or electronic devices are allowed during visitation.

Nolan County Jail Mail and Money

Nolan County Jail mail must be addressed to the inmate's full name at 211 Avenger Field Road, Sweetwater, Texas 79556. Non-legal correspondence is scanned and inspected. Legal mail must be clearly marked "Legal Mail." NCSO says letters and cards are delivered Monday through Friday after inspection, but paper, stamps, envelopes, and postcards cannot be sent in for inmate use. Cash and personal checks should not be mailed.

Use the exact name format and current jail rules because mail can be rejected for prohibited items or unclear delivery information.

Money can be placed into an inmate account at intake and can be used for booking or bonding fees, photocopying, notary fees, commissary, medical or dental charges, fines, or court costs. NCSO names JailATM for online deposits and says commissary orders are submitted weekly. Items can include snacks, hygiene products, stationery, reading glasses, phone time, and over-the-counter medication. Remaining funds are returned on release by institutional check only.

Nolan County Jail Phone Service

Nolan County Jail uses CIDNET Inmate Communications for phone service. Registration is required to initiate calls through CIDNET. Remote visits may be completed by smartphone or home computer, but the research did not locate a separate video vendor name beyond the jail's published visitation and communications systems. Phone and visit rules can change for discipline, classification, court movement, or safety needs.

Set up communications only after confirming the person is still housed at Nolan County Jail, since transfers can make a county account useless.

Nolan County Jail Booking

Booking begins when an arresting officer brings a person into county custody. Jail staff confirm identity, charge or warrant information, and custody paperwork. They search and secure property, put U.S. currency into an inmate account, create the booking or confinement record, and complete intake tasks. NCSO's detention materials specifically name booking, processing new arrestees, fingerprinting, photographing, release processing, and collecting, inventorying, and storing personal property as detention-officer duties.

Medical and mental-health screening are part of the local jail picture. NCSO publishes a Mental Health Division with an in-house therapist and mental-health deputy. The division provides services at arrest and during incarceration, including coping skills, crisis intervention, skills development, post-release continuity work, and coordination with courts for diversion into rehabilitation, psychiatric hospitals, or nursing homes when appropriate. A May 26, 2026 NCSO article announced Tasha Baxter as mental-health counselor and described assessments, crisis support, continued care, rehabilitation, and recidivism reduction.

Nolan County Jail Bond

After processing, an arrestee eligible for bail may make calls to arrange release through family, friends, or a bail agent. The Sheriff's bail page says bond depends on the charges filed, court guidelines, and preset warrant amounts. If there are new charges plus a warrant, more than one bond may have to be posted. Some bonds are cash only, some require a fine, and some warrants or court orders are no-bond holds.

During court business hours, NCSO says Nolan County bonds must be posted at the appropriate court between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. The page lists Nolan County Justice Court at (325) 235-5482, 1st Multicounty Court at Law at (325) 235-2353, and 32nd Judicial District Court at (325) 235-8639. When courts are closed, the jail accepts bonds, but NCSO says the jail does not accept checks or credit cards and cash bonds must be in the full amount only.

Published open-records hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., excluding county holidays. Phone requests are not accepted. NCSO asks requesters to allow 10 business days and says fees or redactions may apply.

Jail programs add local context to the population. Nolan County Jail has a voluntary inmate work program for qualifying inmates, with tasks such as laundry, meal preparation, trash collection, housekeeping, and select off-site tasks. Participants may earn work credit toward a county jail sentence.
